What is Trauma?

Trauma is the psychological damage occurs to an individual resulting from being encountered/ exposed to one or many events of natural disasters, war, accident, death, illnesses, interpersonal abuse and violence.

Symptoms of trauma

For many survivors, trauma symptoms may subsidies after a few days or weeks of the actual event. However, during these periods, individuals may experience strong psychological and physiological reactions.

Trauma symptoms may be experienced at various levels including the following:

  • Emotional: Symptoms usually followed by initial feelings of shock, detachment and numbness. Later on, the individual may experience strong feelings of anxiety, panic, depression, guilt, sadness and anger etc.
  • Cognitive: Symptoms may include, intrusive thinking, flashbacks about the event, nightmares, poor concentration, disorientation, and memory related issues.
  • Behavioural: Symptoms include avoidance of places, people or activities that reminds of the event. Sufferers also tend to lose motivation or interest in activities that were once enjoyable. Withdrawal and isolation from the social situation were also common.
  • Physical: Hypervigilance (scanning and looking for danger), medically unexplained aches and pains, fatigue and exhaustion, easily getting startled and sleep disturbances.

Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)

PTSD can occur to anyone who has been through traumatic life experiences. People are at greater risks if they have a preexisting mental health condition or have been through multiple events of trauma. The likelihood of developing PTSD from a single traumatic incident is very rare.

PTSD can only be diagnosed after 6 months of a traumatic event where the individual struggles to function in their daily life and the trauma symptoms are persistent even after 6 months of the event. In some occasions, individuals may not be symptomatic for a period of time or even for several years after the actual event and then there is a triggering event which resurfaces trauma-related symptoms. In such cases, if the symptoms are persistent for more than two weeks, then there is a likelihood that you may be experiencing an onset of PTSD. It is always ideal to check with your GP if you suspect you might have PTSD symptoms.

Vicarious Trauma (Second Hand Trauma)

It is a form of trauma usually observed among helping professionals and caregivers. A person who helps individuals who suffers from Trauma-related physical injuries or psychological injuries by exposure to their hardship may develop psychological arousal. The sufferers of vicarious trauma involved in behaviours including overstepping the boundaries to extend the help, experiences survivor guilt, exhibit self-sabotaging behaviours in addition to the above-mentioned trauma-related symptoms.
